Victoria Medina,

Photographic Artist and Founder of
NUMINA-IMAGES GALLERY, Photographic Art that enhances the environment, inspires the spirit and provokes discussion.

“NUMINA-IMAGES Capturing The Spirit of Life!”

Victoria Medina grew up surrounded by a family of artists that had the fortune of being able to “take pen to paper.” Inspired by the opportunity “to be a part of the discussion,” Victoria chose photography as her voice, and the computer as her paint brush to transform images and create something new. She communicates on a “World Level” to create a stimulus for positive change.  Her vision is to create a virtual artist opening night through NUMINA-IMAGES GALLERY — someone in a small town in Germany could enjoy the experience by ordering wine, hearing music, and meeting the artist through audio and visual on the website. www.numinaimagesgallery.com

“Life is long. In the course of your life, there may be sunny days, windy days, and days when you are drenched by rain. The sun, however, continues to rise every day regardless of the weather below it. Faith means to make effort every day, causing the hopeful sun to rise in the great “skies” of your heart in any circumstances. Therefore, a person who embraces faith is strong because he (she) possesses the great light of immortality.”

- Daisaku Ikeda

THE SUN

“The Sun is always up there as in life, and continues to shine despite life’s challenges. We always have everything within us to be victorious and successful.”

Inspired by her surroundings, Victoria is always ready to capture and immortalize moments of beauty in nature. Stormy Night was captured after showing her work to a Gallery owner out in the Hamptons. The Gallery owner encouraged Victoria to take a walk around in the area to capture what makes the Hamptons so special. With the freedom of choice and creativity the computer gives, Victoria is always amazed and grateful to be able to transform an otherwise basic image into something magnificent. With Stormy Night she was able to take the image of the ocean in the Hamptons shot one day, and merge it with an image of the sky shot in New York city another day. “I love it when it rains because the sky is always at its most glorious with a clear blue canvas and better clouds afterwards.”

“People flocked to the book “THE SECRET” when it came out because they were tired of all the cynicism that was prevalent in the news and media,” Victoria stated. “Dr. Wayne Dyer, an internationally renowned author & speaker in the field of Self-Development, always reminds us “There is always light if you choose to find it!” You always have a choice which side of the coin do you want to be on. Do you want to be on the positive side or the negative side? In every situation this is the choice you always have. Do you want to focus on the negative or do you want to focus on the positive.” She adds, ” although we are human, and it may not always be possible, I try to focus on the positive cause that just makes me feel a lot better.”

Blane shares, “I remember when I returned from Europe in 2000 and went from having it all to owning not much more than my social security number, T. Harv Eker, author of “The Secrets of the Millionaire Mind”, taught me the importance of gratitude. During a three day intensive training, one of the exercises was a competition to see who could collect the most pennies off the ground in a limited amount of time. Til this day, when I see a penny on the ground I thank the Universe. The lesson learned was that if you are not grateful for the small things in life the Universe will not grant you the bigger things in life. It’s all about appreciating everything the universe has to offer. The coin, though it has negative and positive sides, it is still very valuable in it’s totality as are we Human Beings. It’s important to embrace ourselves completely.”

End of Part I

UNIVERSAL FREEDOM

“I love picking one word that can encapsulate a life!”

The words I chose for the powerful individuals portrayed in “Change” spoke to the representation they held in their time. The two people who represented slavery didn’t have a voice, but without their actions, and their survival, we wouldn’t have Barack Obama where he is today. What did they really have at their disposal at that given moment in time when they were brought to a new land, stripped of all their rights, all their freedoms, not even being able to communicate with their native tongue? What was the only thing they really had in their hearts? They had the instinct to survive!

When you start reading about the biographies of each of these people, there was something within them that was represented in their lives, and that’s what Frederick Douglas always talked about, agitating, and that’s what he did. It’s interesting when you think about one word, like when you think about Donald Trump. He is real estate and no matter what else he talks about or does in his life you are always going to think real estate. So I looked at Sojourner Truth and the fact that her mission in life was to tell the truth of her journey. I tried to find the one word she and Douglas lived and shared.

“This is where I was inspired to dig deeper and do some research. I always thought that the statue of the Greek Goddess of the Underworld, Persephone, represented harvest. It was very eye-opening to learn about a slave completing the placement of the statue on top of the White House. The whole controversy of Jefferson Davis not wanting Thomas Crawford to put a liberty cap representing a freed slave on the statue, but allowing an American Eagle helmet was disturbing to say the least! On the other hand, learning about this filled me with gratitude for my ancestors and what I have today!” -Blane shares his feelings

The day Obama was being inaugurated I learned about and chose the statue of freedom. “If you think about one word that represents the United States it’s freedom!” When I heard the same story that day, that the White House was built by slaves and that it was the slave owner that completed the Statue of Freedom and put it on top of the White House the irony of it just flies to you! “Change” is the journey, it’s one story of America dealing with Barack. “The power is in the journey, the process, not the beginning or the end!”

European descendants who had freedom in America from the time of slavery to the 20th century usually came from a lack of freedom in their own countries, which may have included religious, economic or speech, and then of course women didn’t come into their own freedom until the 20th century. So in this particular case it was still freedom of another sort in a cultures journey, and it may come at different times, but it is the underlining foundation of every human being to want to be free and independent.

I thought the beauty of the Freedom Statue was that, while being ironic, it also symbolized how special America is because of our ideology. It’s stunning when you read those words and it can’t help but provoke some kind of emotional response. Then you take a step back and you realize that not everybody lives up to those words. What I find most moving is the desire of this country to always strive for it. That’s what that meant for me at that moment. It was a longer journey for a particular group of people in this country, but they have also attained it. “I honestly feel that freedom is something that every human being wants. It’s universal!”

“One Nation, One Mission, One Promise” I wrote shortly after 9/11. It was in reaction to the Patriot Act and all that was going on. “The one thing that takes away people’s freedom are their fears!” Every day the people you think you’re afraid of are right next to you. What makes the United States so beautiful is that we can all walk along the same path and we’re not shooting each other. We find ways to work together, go to the movies, and shop in the same mall. We do all of these things and maybe we go to our homes differently not inviting anyone in, but we find a way to live in harmony and I think that’s what we remember. “We are truly leaders of the free world because people from all over the world in every culture reside in America! That’s the point I wanted people to walk away with.”

Don’t be afraid of somebody, don’t be afraid to talk to them, because if you take away all the politics, all the religion, all the packaging, and all the junk at the end of the day it’s okay. So what’s your favorite food? Who’s your favorite celebrity? What’s your favorite music? What’s your favorite color? We all want the same thing: Freedom, Happiness, Joy, Laughter, and most of all Love. That’s what I wanted people to think about, how great this country is and that we all could live side by side in it.

“Fear Takes Away Freedom!”

“When we are aware that each moment of each day, each gesture and step we take is truly mystical and full of wonder, we will live our lives with greater thought and care. We will also have greater respect and appreciation for the lives of others.” -Daisaku IKeda

THE WORD

“It would be interesting to ask a young person using the ‘N’ word, ‘How would you use Hitler?’ “

Would we expect a Jewish person to run around with that rationale, and would the same argument be valid to try to decrease the power of the word by using it in a different form? I do feel there are valid arguments on both sides. If you’re using the word with a group of friends and everyone knows the meaning amongst them then they have a right because of freedom of speech. When I’m in America and talking to my friends, I don’t have a problem talking about the good and the bad of America. But, when I’m overseas and I meet somebody who’s bashing America, No! I will not put up with it because it’s my country so have some respect for me!

“The image speaks to me about the importance of educating our young people. It speaks to the importance of not having generation gaps, but respecting our elders in the community, staying connected to our grandparents, our ancestors. This is sorely lacking, particularly in our community. So something like the “N” word is thrown around in society and this disturbs me because it keeps people down. If young people knew what pain was behind that word and the intent of that word, they wouldn’t use it so freely!” – Blane shares his feelings

MENTAL PRIVILEGE

“Material possessions cannot be enjoyed after death. But millionaires rich in life force are able to freely make use of the treasures of the universe in lifetime after lifetime and enjoy a journey of eternal happiness. This is what constitutes proof of true victory in life.” -Daisaku Ikeda

In this country we have a term “minority group” referring to anything from race to political party, but I would like everyone to consider themselves not being of a minority by virtue of the fact that we’re American, and privileged beyond “Main St.” Being born in this country, you could say there is a class system. What I would like people to consider is that even on the level of homelessness, when you think of it in third world countries compared to what it is in this country, it puts all Americans in a different class. I don’t think anywhere in the world should someone be homeless! It’s crazy that we have homelessness in this country, it shouldn’t be!

When you have a country that has free education, free libraries, it comes from our taxes, we do pay for it, and that in and of itself is privilege. That we have to go to school to get an education reflects the fact that we are born pretty wealthy to begin with. Which brings us to the mind. Now you have to understand that your mind has to be educated in order to take advantage of the privilege that you have. There are people in this country that cannot read or write and that makes no sense to me! If you don’t tap into the power of your mind you’re just closed to so many possibilities.

The America Idol, Fantasia, who was in “The Color Purple” said she was illiterate and look at what she did. Now you can’t tell me that we’re not in a really wealthy country that gives you opportunities if you’re willing to look at them, get past the blame, and take action. She was able to use the intelligence of her mind to take her to another level and it didn’t have to be through textbooks. She used the gifts that were within her and she went forward with it. So anyone born in the western world and especially in this country is already starting from a privileged background.

The middle class have a harder time than the poor and the rich in this country because we’re paying to keep the rich wealthy by buying products and we’re paying through our taxes to help the poor. As middle class we need to be a lot more in control of where we are, where we’re going, what we’re doing, and recognize propaganda for what it is, because at the end of the day we’re going to pay for it one way or another. We come from a privileged country, we have great minds, and if we use our minds first to make sure we take care of ourselves, our families, and our community, we can help America as a whole to be richer!

“With my design consulting company I make sure my clients are in touch with their own greatness or inner potential so that they are not depending on things outside of themselves to feel complete. After our consultation, not only are they in a mindset to save money, but they are also in a powerful place to attract wealth into their lives. This is really important for me!” - Blane shares his mission

That’s very important! Being empowered within your own world, if it’s just you and your home, you and your spouse, you and your family, if you allow yourself to be the leader of your own destiny then there isn’t anywhere you can’t go because you’re not being distracted by what people think you should have. Literally, I mean how many people needed to stand on line for the I-Phone? It’s a great tool, I’m not disputing it, if you can afford it, if it’s part of your business, and if you can look at the cost effectiveness of “Own That I-Phone!” But, if that I-Phone at the end of the month is putting you back, and you could be saving that money instead of carrying a status symbol, take a good step back and say, “Who am I really pleasing in this?” Where’s your leadership at home, in your life, in your own destiny?

FEMALE CATALYST

There isn’t any man out there who has had success without a woman!”

Originally, I wanted to create a tribute to Obama. At the same time, I didn’t want the contributions of women to not be acknowledged. So for every man represented in “Change” there’s a woman. I started out in the 17th century with a man and a woman who needed to survive in their life. Then we go to the 1800′s where you have Sijourner Truth and Frederick Douglas who represented another part of that era where they could go beyond survival and lend their voices to their mission for freedom. So, the first group was about survival, the second voices, which carried us into the 20th century giving birth to Martin Luther King, but it took the spark of Rosa Parks‘ actions to ignite Martin Luther King’s vision to a national level. In the 21st century I don’t believe that Obama would have had the success that he had as quickly as he did without the endorsement of Oprah Winfrey at the Iowa Caucus. If it came out later okay, but I think her timing took him to the level he needed and then the momentum went from there. Like Oprah, we all have the potential to achieve something phenomenal. Every person in “Change” is about humanity. “Ultimately each person represents some form of humanity that anyone from any culture could relate to!”

A VOICE

Everyone has a voice!”

What concerns me right now is the voice of the union being systematically squashed. It’s very clear what’s going on in the automobile industry. What saddens me, as leaders of the free world, is that the United States went through a series of events that allowed unions to come into fruition and develop some kind of fairness between management and the people who do the hard labor. I listen to the talk about how we have to compete and that labor is cheaper in other countries so therefore we need to go backwards to compete and this does not represent us as leaders. We should be leading by example showing the best way to take care of our labor force. We should not be breaking our promises through loopholes of bankruptcy that take away people’s pensions they were promised.

I find words as equally interesting as images, and what people accept in the vernacular if you hear it over and over again. There’s this term “cost of legacy”, but the fact of the matter is that a company has a legacy because their biggest asset is their employees. When you look at the image “Change” it begins with slavery, which in this country was started as cheap labor. Now we have an administration which campaigns on “We can’t just worry about Wall St. we have to worry about Main St.,” and I don’t hear Main St. being taken care of lately. For the auto makers to not get the assistance that will allow unions to be able to thrive in this country is not to me a marriage of Main St. and Wall St. It’s actually a going backwards and regressing.

“That saddens me because as leaders we should be teaching all these third world countries that you’re not supposed to have people work to death so I can buy a bag in this country!” I would rather pay more money and know the jobs are going to be there and find a way to raise our salaries instead of the top 2% getting an unfair balance. I think about what Bush Sr. said about the trickle down effect being one of destruction not growth.

“We have long bought into the 45 year plan: We go to school, learn a trade, and go out into the world to get a job in our field. We work until we’re 65, get a nice pension, 401K, and social security. This needs to be analyzed because what’s happening now is people are being misplaced out of that system losing their jobs and the savings that went with it! The truth is 95% of the population continue to work believing that they are creating financial independence when in actuality they are contributing to the ever growing wealth of the top 5%. A fortunate consequence is that this is forcing people to look at other options. People are realizing that the dreams that they had on the back burner can actually lead them to financial independence instead. So we are seeing a rise in the entrepreneurial spirit and the creation of residual income which is exciting and empowering!”

- Blane shares his observation

We get so caught up in the drastic and negative side of what’s going on that we fail to see what’s going on underneath. All these new and wonderful developments are actually surfacing as well! The other thing that I love about technology is that it’s Ageless, Genderless, and Cultureless. You can basically open up a company and work with people all over the world and whatever prejudices you have must melt away because you can only look at the accomplishments of that person, and that’s one thing I do love! This is evening the playing field for some groups of people.

“I think we’re going to come back big, I really do!”

INVOKE

One picture is worth more than ten thousand words.” -Early Chinese Proverb

A picture speaks a thousand words.”Frederick Barnard, 1921

What I love is that they’re not my words.” – Victoria Medina

It is interesting for me to see what 10,000 words would be for somebody else looking at my image. I have one point of view and they’re my words, and someone else has another point of view which are their words. “It’s like Music!

I started my career as an actress and learned from improv that we constantly feed off each other. These words of wisdom have stayed with me to this day. “Listen very closely to the people around you, because they can take you to places you could never get on your own.”

RIPPLE EFFECT

Whenever somebody accomplishes anything, a country, an individual person, what were the paths they took to accomplish it?

I’ve always been fascinated with history. For example, Julie Andrews in her 20′s was performing on Broadway because she grew up surrounded by a family in Musical Theater, so as a child star she had twenty years of experience which led to her achievement on Broadway.

With President Obama, my image represents only half the story, because his mother’s side of the family had a huge effect on his achievements today. “Change” speaks to the fact that in order for him to have reached where he is today there were certain things that had to be in place or it could never have happened.

Similarly, in order for this country to be as great as it is today there were certain things that had to be put in place before that could happen. That’s what really fascinates me. It’s not just this moment, but it is what has already transpired for this moment to have occurred.

In my reading of “Letters From My Father I discovered what inspired President Obama into public service. His father apparently came to America, learned a lot and went back to Africa to try and help build change in his community. Sadly, the community fought his father and he failed, so I can see where that would inspire President Obama to succeed. Even though he didn’t really grow up with his father there is still a very strong spiritual connection.

For me it comes full circle on two levels. On a smaller level, within President Obama’s own family unit, because his father went back to Africa and failed, while President Obama succeeded in creating change in his own small community in America. In that sense, it’s a small circle. On a larger scale, it’s very interesting to think about a group of people being forced to come here as slaves and then have someone of the same heritage become our president less than 150 years later.

There’s a fine line between blaming and taking responsibility! I think if you’re human you’re going to blame. There was a moment for each one of the leaders portrayed in “Change” when they had to blame someone in order to direct their energies for change. You have to know who it is that is causing the oppression in order to turn it around, whether it’s on levels as horrific as racism and slavery, or unions and corporations. When you can turn that anger, that blame, that desire for balance into action, that’s when you go beyond the blaming and into something of a more positive solution. Blame is an intriguing word because it acknowledges a wrong, but when you allow that wrong to just be and you don’t do anything, then you give up your power!
